We are also looking for designers and techies. If you’re interested please email Matt Russell at dr.dramatherapy@gmail.com.

HART Theatre is a non-profit, volunteer-based theatre.  There is no stipend.  All actors, tech-crew, and staff receive two comp tickets.

Characters:

Jorge and Flavio are both male, and in a very happy and loving relationship together.  Successful and wealthy businessmen from Portugal, they are thrilled to be visiting America in the hopes that Bernice will be their surrogate.  Although Jorge is generally trying to correct Flavio, neither of them have the best command of English.

Wayne is the husband of Bernice.  He isn’t the brightest fellow, and Jorge and Flavio’s relationship makes him uncomfortable, but he’s willing to see past it for a time as long as there’s money to be made.  His next-door neighbor, best friend and drinking buddy is Gil - more due to his proximity than anything else.  Even though he’s barely scraping by it hasn’t affected his love for America.

Bernice is a sweet and good natured small-town girl.  She’s excited at the idea of being a surrogate, both for the money and to be a part of something “bigger.”  She’s been a mother twice before with her first husband, but he has custody and she only sees them in the summer.  She loved being pregnant before, and doesn’t really see any downsides to being a surrogate.

Gil is an avid stoner with no shortage of entrepreneurial ideas.  He spends most of his time next door at Wayne and Bernice’s place or watching reality television shows.  He finds it very funny that Wayne is “selling his wife’s lady-parts,” but is also intrigued and inspired by the idea.  He has five children with his wife Dawn, which in his mind is evidence of his irresistibility, not his disbelief in birth control.

Dawn is married to and has five children with Gil.  Her best friend is Bernice, and they spend a lot of time together with just each other, and with their husbands.  She’s a bit skeptical of Bernice’s choice to be a surrogate, but she’s supportive because “that’s what friends do.”  She recognizes that Gil is a dolt, but loves him anyway.
