Damselfly
HART is excited to announce the world premiere of Damselfly: The Diana Brookins Story.
Written by HART founder Kim (Sandstrom) Hawksey with collaboration by Helen Haskell of Mothers Against Medical Error, Damselfly is often light-hearted, humorous, and passionate, yet it still conveys the real-life account of a deadly breakdown in our healthcare system and the resulting loss of a bright theatre light. Damselfly is the first theatrical production of its kind, dedicated to safe healthcare. It is based on the life of Diana Brookins, a young Hillsboro actress who was the daughter of HART founder Kim (Sandstrom) Hawksey. Diana, a long-time actress on the HART stage, died July 25, 2004 (National Patient Safety Day), from the effects of a routine surgical procedure four months earlier. She lived in the hospital for 110 days and succumbed to her injuries eight days following the birth of her only child, Julia Belle. Damselfly also features an epilogue that brings to life children Lewis Blackman, James Mannix, and Leah Coufal, all lost to medical harm.
Mothers Against Medical Error is a co-sponsor of this production and has waived royalty fees, to help raise funds for HART Theatre's ongoing artistic mission. Damselfly is also about the genesis of HART Theatre and includes scenes and references to shows from 1994 to the present. Damselfly features local actors and actresses, many of whom worked onstage with Diana Brookins.
NOTE: This production is not a part of our 2011-2012 season, and as such is not included in the season ticket package. This show is a supplement to our regular season.
There will be no perrformance of Damselfly on Friday, August 3.
